The Battle of the Somme 1916.

This famous painting (by James Princep Beadle) hangs in the West corridor of Belfast City Hall. The painting depicts the 11th Battalion (South Antrim) Royal Irish Rifles going ‘over the top’ at the Battle of the Somme on Saturday 1st July 1916. This Battalion was the right forward unit of 108th Infantry Brigade.

The young officer in the painting with raised arm is Lieutenant Francis Bodenham who was one month short of his 20th Birthday on this day, during the battle he was wounded and while recuperating was assigned to assist the artist produce this painting, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1917 and was later presented to the City of Belfast.

The painting was officially unveiled there on 1st July 1918 by the lady Mayoress and accepted by the Lord Mayor (Alderman James Johnston) on behalf of the City of Belfast.
